The SPFL has gone to the polls to vote on the nuclear option of abandoning the season in the lower leagues and paving the way to calling the Premiership's.

The clock is ticking ahead of today’s 5pm deadline and civil war is raging in the boardrooms and on the Hotline.

There’s only one topic in town and agreement is in short supply – along with goodwill.

Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “The SFA suspending football until June 10 is a good decision. Clubs could tell players it’s now the close season and you are on holiday, although they are still isolated.

“The the season can be played out until it is mathematically impossible to call.”

John Bruce emailed: “Whatever happened to those two words ‘mathematically impossible’? Have they been erased from football’s vocabulary so that one team can be gifted a title and another sent to a lower division – with almost a quarter of the season still to play?

“In what other sport would a team or player be crowned champion when they haven’t actually won the competition or completed the event, whilst still being able to be caught by the other competitors?

Coronavirus grips Scottish football

“We all realise that these are unprecedented times, but just handing over a league title would be unprecedented, even in the history of Scottish football’s ludicrous decisions.

Alfie Mullin, London, said: “There is one simple way to divide the SPFL money. There are 42 clubs in the SPFL, they all get an equal split. That may help to save most of the smaller clubs. The bigger clubs will likely have good overdraft arrangements with their banks and shareholders.

“We can sort out the championship and relegation candidates later.”

Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: “I’m glad Dundee have made this pathetic motion as it gives us Celtic fans the chance to show we aren’t acting in self interest. Dundee’s plan would see Celtic champions but it must never see the light if day as it is an embarrassing attempt to gain favour with their fans. They are showing jealousy and bitterness to their local rivals Utd – the same as the nonsense coming from Ibrox.”

Seamus Gallacher, Govan, said: “Rangers and their fans need to face reality. It’s Celtic’s title. No matter how it’s dressed up,  Celtic would never lose a 13 point lead.

“Call it tainted if you want, but it leaves Celtic on the verge of history.”

James Thompson emailed: “ Rangers and Hearts must work together and bring Doncaster to a court of law.

“The SPFL chief executive is just Peter Lawwell’s poodle.”

Jimmy Fyfe, Falkirk, said: “I can’t believe our football authorities. Why is it one rule for Premier League and other for the other league. It should be one decision for all no matter which way they go. Get your act together SPFL.”

James Maclean, Isle of Bute, said: “Rangers don’t know the meaning of sporting integrity. They should check their history over the last 10 years and look up the dictionary to see what it means.

“They should be ashamed.”

It looks like we could be in for a long night.
