CCTV footage from a takeaway in Newland Avenue captured Pawel Relowicz strolling down the street just hours after allegedly raping and murdering the Hull student, a trial against him has heard.

Relowicz, 26, is accused of "stalking" Libby after a chance meeting with her in Beverley Road, where she had ended up on a freezing cold night on January 31, 2019 after being refused entry to The Welly, a nearby nightclub, during a night out with friends.

He then raped and murdered her after driving her to Oak Road playing fields, the prosecution has said.

Prosecution barrister Richard Wright QC set out the case against Relowicz, of Raglan Street, in the first few days of the trial.

He told the court Libby had been dropped off by a taxi at her Wellesley Avenue home, but instead of going inside she walked out into Beverley Road in a drunk and distressed state.

The court heard how a number of people confirmed they had seen her drunk and walking unsteadily, even sitting or lying on the snow-covered ground. Some even tried unsuccessfully to talk to her and help her.

It was shortly after that when Relowicz encountered her at the corner of Haworth Street, the court has heard.

Relowicz, who in August 2019 pleaded guilty to nine offences including four counts of voyeurism, had frequently "targeted" the student area of the city for his sexual offending, Mr Wright said.

Mr Wright told the court Relowicz had happened upon Libby in her drunken and vulnerable state and "bided his time" to ensure they were alone before getting her into his car, either by force or persuasion, and driving her to Oak Road playing fields at around 12.11am, shortly after the clocks had ticked over into February 1.

It was there that the prosecution say Relowicz raped and murdered Libby, leaving again just over seven minutes later.

Two hours later, Relowicz was caught on CCTV in Newland Avenue appearing to perform a sex act in the street.

Mr Wright said: "“We see him getting out of the car and go to Newland Avenue, where he appears to masturbate in the street, and then go back to the car before leaving Alexandra Road, back down Newland Avenue, on to Queens Road, Princes Avenue, Victoria Avenue or Park Avenue - we can’t be sure - on to Salisbury Street, on to Ella Street, back on to Newland Avenue and on to Raglan Street."

On Tuesday, Mr Wright told the court how later on in the early hours of February 1, Relowicz had been caught again on CCTV heading back out into the street "looking for the condom" he had used.

Detective Constable James Grandidge, the officer in charge of the CCTV for the case, said the cameras had picked up Relowicz doing so.

“We pick him up coming out of there and going across the road to Alexandra Road towards Chicken George, which is where a camera is activated and we see him walking along the front and see him stand and face the wall," he said.

The trial against Relowicz, which started on Tuesday, January 12, at Sheffield Crown Court before Judge Lambert, is expected to last four weeks.

Relowicz was due to stand trial in June 2020, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. He denies charges of rape and murder.

The trial continues.
