Carer, 28, ‘killed four-month-old baby girl and tried to blame it on toddler being “rough” with her’

A FLORIDA woman allegedly killed a four-month-old girl she was looking after and tried to blame it on a toddler, who was also in her care at the time, police have said.

Samantha Mariel Angeles-De La Rosa, who is 28 and from Bartow, is facing one count of second degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse in the death of the infant.

Police attended Angeles-De La Rosa's home just before 10am on Tuesday, and found the infant unresponsive, with multiple bruises on her body, head, and face, according to Bay News 9.

The girl was pronounced dead about an hour later after being taken to Winter Haven Hospital.

Deputies said Angeles-De La Rosa told them that the injuries were caused by a 21-month-old toddler in the home pulling the girl off of a changing table and onto the floor.

“(Angeles-De La Rosa) told deputies that a 21-month-old toddler in the home pulled the victim off of a changing table and onto the floor, causing the injuries that proved to be fatal," a statement from the Sheriff's department read.

"She was the only adult in the home at the time."

Detectives said Angeles-De La Rosa told them several different versions of the story.

One version was that the toddler had been rough with the baby before, using toys to hit her in the face.

An autopsy showed the girl had a fractured skull which produced a brain bleed along with contusions on the outside of the brain.

Dr Stephen Nelson, the medical examiner, said that such injuries were caused by blunt force trauma and could not be caused by a 2-3 foot fall onto carpet, WFTV09 reported.

He said the girl also had two healing rib fractures and a healing fracture on her left arm.

“Dr. Nelson advised those three fractures were older but were caused by significant force," the news release continued. "Dr Nelson also stated the force was not consistent with an accident and injuries were caused from intentional force. Dr Nelson advised the cause of the victim’s death was blunt force head trauma and the manner of death is homicide."

Officials said they interviewed Angeles-De La Rosa for a second time, after receiving the autopsy results.

She told them she had recently pulled the baby out of the car seat too forcefully, causing the baby's arm to get caught in the seat belt.

Then she reportedly told them that she recently became angry and squeezed the baby around her abdomen, causing her to cry.

Finally, Angeles-De La Rosa admitted that on the morning of the incident, she began to change the baby's diaper, but the baby would not stop crying.

She "immediately began thinking about ‘how overwhelmed she is in life,’” deputies said.

Angeles-De La Rosa told investigators that when the baby began crying, she began to cry and then “lost it in a split second.”

According to a news release, Angeles-De La Rosa grabbed the infant by the shoulders and struck the baby’s head two times against the wood frame of a changing table.

“Despite their life-saving efforts, and the efforts of hospital staff, the victim was pronounced deceased at Winter Haven Hospital approximately one hour later,” officials said, according to Click Orlando.

Sheriff Grady Judd added: "There is absolutely no excuse to hurt a baby. We will hold this woman accountable for her actions."

Authorities have not released the name of the child.
