Captain Tom Moore leaves fans emotional as he describes carrying dead uncle’s body home aged 15 after tragic accident

CAPTAIN Tom Moore won the hearts of the nation when he raised £40million for the NHS at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The former British army officer, now 100, made fans emotional as he spoke openly about his fascinating life for an ITV documentary.

Viewers were engrossed by his tales from the past century - and left teary-eyed when he told about a shocking death he faced as a teenager.

Tom's Uncle Billy was described as a "colourful character who met a tragic end" in 1935.

"He was working on his car in the garage," Tom explained.

"He stayed there too long and the fumes got him.

"My father and I had to get him out of his car in his garage and carry him in.

"I carried a dead Billy into the house. I have that recollection and it's not the happiest one.

"I missed him very much. It was very sad."

The fundraising hero is now in talks for a movie about his astonishing life - and it's sure to be a huge success judging by the response to tonight's show.

The only complaint made about The Life & Times of Captain Sir Tom on ITV was that the 60-minute show wasn't long enough.

One fan said: "My hero, wonderful man , lovely sense of humour . The world would be a wonderful place if one could clone millions of Captains Sir Tom Moores."

Another said: "Captain Tom Moore has lived through the worse times & good people of today could learn a lot from this remarkable man he’s got so much love, care & compassion for others."
