Brexit LIVE: UK negotiators set to break India tradition and secure £23bn superdeal

Liz Truss says UK will be 'adding' to trade deals in 2021

Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, said the UK PM was expected to visit India in the Spring and meet counterpart Narendra Modi, allowing talks to gain traction. Mr Ellias said India was keen on a trade deal with the UK following the country’s exit from the EU as it was an important trade partner and an attractive market for Indian service providers.

Mr Ellis added: "India has not been enthusiastic about trade deals but we see a definite shift and a desire for bilateral trade deals including with us.

"I think both sides will want to see from the other some indication of concrete steps towards that deal.

“That is why there has been talk about an early harvest to see if we can do any initial moves which can show the seriousness on both sides.”

It comes after officials on both sides signed off on a new Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) last month which will boost “bilateral trade and economic relations” with the world’s fifth-biggest economy.

The ETP is seen as an initial springboard to securing a long-term trade deal with the “Asian tiger”.

Secretary of State for International Trade Liz Truss said India’s trade relationship was worth £23billion in 2019 with more than 383 Indian companies in the UK supporting 82,000 jobs.

Ms Truss stressed, “trade relations with India are absolutely a priority”.

SNP plans for Scottish independence would be a "Brexit 2.0" that would harm the NHS and cost jobs, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has insisted.

With Scottish Parliament elections due to take place in May, the Lib Dem said voters were now "weeks from an election that could determine the fate of the United Kingdom".

Sir Ed added that Brexit had made it "more difficult to do business, more difficult to keep your job", claiming that "the Tories seem determined to make us smaller, poorer and more isolated".
