Fire crews in Cheshire are tackling a mammoth blaze which broke out in a lorry carrying chocolate.

All lanes of the A556 near the M56 south of Altrincham are blocked while emergency services battle the flames.

In a statement, the Twitter account for the North West Motorway Police said: "Highways North West and police currently dealing with an HGV fire on the A556 near to the M56 towards the M6, all lanes blocked, driver safe and well, for info HGV was laden with chocolate."

It later added: "Cheshire Fire on scene trying to get blaze under control, will keep you updated when lanes are to be reopened."

Highways England's account for the North West also tweeted: "A556 southbound at Mere is currently CLOSED due to a fire.

"Traffic officers from Cheshire Police Roads and Crime Unit, North West Motorway Police and Cheshire Fire are en-route."

In a further update, it tweeted to confirm the A556 "is currently stopped both directions whilst the fire is put out".
