Boss finds super-rare 6,000-year-old horn in his office and nearly sold it on eBay

A BOSS got a pleasant surprise when he discovered he had a super-rare 6,000-year-old horn in his office.

He was about to flog the 27in protuberance when an expert told him it belonged to the aurochs — a long-extinct cattle ancestor.

It had been unearthed in the 1980s in Derby and given to a manager in the concrete industry.

He hung it for several years on his office wall, thinking it was a mammoth tusk.

But when he put it on eBay ten years ago, bids of thousands of pounds poured in within minutes.

A US professor contacted him to say it was from an aurochs, which died out in the 17th century.

Its owner, now 71 and retired, said: “I checked and took it off eBay straight away.”

The owner, who does not want to be named, said: “Local workmen were finding all sorts of ancient animal relics including teeth from saber-toothed tigers.

"For years I thought it was a mammoth tusk.

“When my kids were young, they took it to school.”

He has decided to sell it after it rolled out of his van and hit him on the leg.

“I thought it must be divine intervention,” he said.

Auctioneer Charles Hanson, who is selling it this month, said the horn could be 4,000 to 6,000 years old.

He added: “It’s a remarkable find.

“It’s strange to think these mighty beasts with fearsome horns roamed round what is now Derby city centre.”
