Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold a Downing Street press conference from 5pm today, January 22, No 10 has confirmed.
He will be addressing the nation and answering questions from the press regarding the latest developments in Britain's fight against coronavirus.
It is not yet known who will be joining him for the latest briefing.
However, regular experts at the Downing Street press conferences include England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific officer Sir Patrick Vallance.
What is he expected to say?
The PM will address the nation tonight after record death rates were seen this week.
He is expected to urge people to continue to stay inside to reduce the pressure on the NHS.
A Downing Street official told Playbook that the PM will insist “there’s still a way to go” and urge Brits not to break the rules.
But he will hail the vaccine rollout - revealing that 2million Brits have been vaccinated in the last week alone.
Ministers are worried that the numbers aren't coming down as swiftly as in previous lockdowns - possibly as a result of the new variant.
A record 1,820 deaths were reported earlier this week - and cases are still sky-high though they have fallen across the country.
Hospitals are under significant pressure with Britain's Covid alert level still at five - meaning they are at risk of being overwhelmed.
The official said: “This has been a very bleak week and we need everybody to keep sticking to the rules and helping to protect hospitals, which are under the most tremendous pressure.
“We aren’t yet seeing the sharp fall in infections that we had last April and May and we need to keep going.”
