Bomb disposal crews were called to Rishton today after a device was discovered in the canal.

The area around High Street was cordoned off by police at around 3.30pm as explosive experts investigated the scene.

Officers urged people to avoid the area as they dealt with the incident.

Police tweeted: "Please be aware that High Street, Rishton is currently closed whilst police attend an emergency incident. We are asking the public to avoid this area for the time being. Thank you"

It is understood that a suspected hand grenade was discovered in the water, with reports that it was discovered by magnet fishers

Police officers have confirmed that the road is now back open.

Lancashire Police said: "High Street, Rishton is now open again. Thanks to everyone in the area for their cooperation."
