A black man in the United States has been accused of carrying out a string of burglaries by disguising himself as white.

Authorities allege Rockim Prowell, 30, donned a realistic mask with fake hair and glasses to go on a crime spree in a wealthy neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Police said they noticed something strange about the suspect in CCTV footage which always showed him with his mouth apparently open.

Detectives investigating the break-ins at homes around L.A. allege it was open because the suspect was wearing a mask to disguise himself as a white man to steal from Beverly Hills properties, according to US reports.

Prowell is charged with two counts each of burglary, grand theft and one count of vandalism in relation to two home burglaries between April and July last year, the Beverly Hills Police Department said.

Police have linked him to more than 30 home burglaries in the Los Angeles area, according to Fox News.

Police arrested Prowell, from Inglewood, after his car was searched during a routine traffic stop.

Officers allegedly found the life-like mask in his car, which they say had stolen licence plates.

During a search of his home, police say they found stolen items connecting him to additional burglaries.

The LAPD Pacific Division told the network Prowell was connected to seven burglaries in its area.

He has reportedly been released from police custody and is due to appear in court on May 25.
