  • DAMAGE TO SMALL BUSINESSES COULD BE 'IRREPARABLE' THIS BLACK FRIDAY

Mark Dodds, chair of Chartered Institute of Marketing's food, drink and agriculture sector interest group said: “There are long Black Friday queues again this year, but people are waiting on websites rather than pavements.

“The deserted high streets could be the final nail in the coffin for many small and specialist retailers who must wait until next week to start picking-up critical Christmas trade.

“It may result in a big spike in sales today and over the weekend, but will have far-reaching consequences for our high streets, as consumers splurge before lockdown lifts.

“Even those smaller businesses with sophisticated online operations are unlikely to be able to compete with the marketing spend of the bigger brands and the damage may be irreparable.”
