BBC TV licence backlash: Humiliating survey shames corporation as 'too woke and expensive'

TV licence fee: Jonathan Gullis criticises BBC

The survey indicated 51 percent of British adults think the BBC is "bad value". The Savanta ComRes poll found a third described the BBC as "very bad value". Five percent of those polled said it was "good value", with eight percent saying it is "very good value".

The survey also found around 34 percent of Britons believed the BBC focussed too much on "woke" issues.

And 47 percent said the BBC only represented the views of those in London rather than the rest of the country.

Two-thirds of those surveyed also said the non-payment of the licence fee should not be a criminal offence for the over-75s.

This comes after the BBC scrapped free TV licence fees for most over-75s last year, which sparked a furious campaign to defund the corporation.

Rebecca Ryan, campaign director for Defund the BBC, who commissioned the poll, said the results showed how out of touch the BBC was "with the vast majority of people in the UK".

She said the Government must decriminalise non-payment of the mandatory licence fee.

Ms Ryan urged the Government to "change the law that means you have to pay the licence fee in order to watch or record non-BBC live TV".

She said: “This is a damning poll that shows how the BBC is completely out of touch with the vast majority of people in the UK.

“More than half of Brits think the Licence Fee is bad value for money.

“The game is up. The Government must decriminalise non-payment of the Licence Fee as soon as possible.

“The next sensible step is to change the law that means you have to pay the Licence Fee in order to watch or record non-BBC live TV.

“It is outdated, unfair and totally illogical in the year 2021 with so many alternatives to the BBC available to consumers.”

A BBC spokesperson said: "The BBC is the most used media brand in the country, with 91 percent of adults coming to us each week.

"We are committed to serving all parts of the UK with brilliant content our audiences love."

Last month, the BBC announced they would be rising the mandatory licence fee by £1.50 from £157.50 to £159 from April.

The news sparked a strong reaction on Twitter.

People buying or renewing their TV licence after April 1 will pay the new higher fee.

Those already buying a licence on an instalment scheme which started before that date, such as via a monthly direct debit or weekly cash payments, will continue to make payments totalling £157.50 until it comes up for renewal.

The fee is set by the Government, which announced in 2016 that it would rise in line with inflation for five years from April 2017.

The new cost equates to 43p per day, according to the BBC.

The Savanta ComRes poll was commissioned by Defund the BBC. 2,321 UK adults were polled online on March 1, 2021.
