Bayern Munich have confirmed their interest in Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano.
Following the arrival of Amad Diallo, United aren't expected to make any more signings this January but M.E.N. Sport understands that the club want to make four new additions to the squad in 2021.
As well as a right-back, defensive midfielder and right-winger, a new centre-back is understood to be high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's wish list.
Although United re-took top spot in the Premier League with a victory over Fulham on Wednesday, they remain fragile in defence, as Ademola Lookman's opener inside five minutes showed - and they have conceded more goals than any other side in the top 10.
Following the sale of Chris Smalling in the summer and the potential departures of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo this year, United have just four senior centre-backs in their ranks, three of which - Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe - have been injury-prone.
As a result the signing of a new central-defender can be justified, with United having scouted Brighton's Ben White and are long-time fans of Real Madrid's Raphael Varane.
RB Leipzig's Upamecano is also admired by the club after establishing himself as one of world's best defenders in his side's march to the Champions League semi-final, for the first time in their history, last season.
The 22-year-old signed a new contract with the club last year but it includes a buy-out clause of just £40million, which becomes active this coming summer.
As a result, United will have to compete with many of Europe's top teams if they wish to sign Upamecano at the bargain price, with German giants Bayern already making their interest known.
The Bavarians are set to lose David Alaba on a free and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has made it clear that the Frenchman could be the club's replacement.
Manchester United beat Fulham 2-1 thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba.
Pogba once again turned in a high-class performance as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side reclaimed top spot in the Premier League. Now United turn their attention to another clash with rivals Liverpool, this time in the FA Cup fourth round.

“We will of course deal with it, not only with this player, but in principle with all the positions where we want and need to do something," he said.
When pushed on a potential agreement, he added: "It's too early for something like that, he's still a Leipzig player at least until the end of the season.
“But it's common knowledge that he has a clause in his contract."
