‘Ballon d’Or belongs to Robert Lewandowski’ – Bayern star’s agent slams ‘undeserving’ Lionel Messi clinching 2021 award

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI'S agent has hit out at 2021 Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi by claiming he is "undeserving" of the award.

The 34-year-old Argentine collected the prestigious award for a historic SEVENTH time on Monday night as he pipped the Polish striker to the honour.

That was despite Lewandowski netting 48 goals in 40 games last season and 25 in 20 so far in the current campaign.

The Bayern Munich forward, who took home the inaugural Striker of the Year gong, also missed out on winning the Ballon d'Or last year as the awards ceremony did not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And Lewandowski's agent Pini Zahavi has slammed the decision to give it to Messi ahead of the Pole.

Speaking after the decision was made, he said: “Big congratulations to Messi. An impressive player and an eternal legend of football.

"But the Ballon d'Or 2021 is not his. Not this time. The Golden Ball belongs to Robert Lewandowski.

“He wasn't robbed, but he's the man who deserves it. No wonder that many hundreds of millions of fans find the result difficult to believe at the prestigious football event.

"Monday should have ended with Robert celebrating his first Ballon d'Or."

Messi was incredibly gracious when accepting the award which takes him two ahead of long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

And he even spoke directly about second place Lewandowski during his speech, admitting he deserved to win it.

He said: "I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it’s been a real honour to compete with you.

“Everyone knows and we agree that you were the winner last year.

“I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d’Or - you deserve it and you should have it at home."
