The Great British Bake Off returned and one hopeful baker produced a cake that left many viewers fearing they will have nightmares.

The new, socially-distanced version of the Channel 4 show saw Noel Fielding, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood return to the Bake Off tent, to be joined by Matt Lucas, who was replacing Sandi Toksvig.

The Little Britain star probably never thought he would be facing a bake that could bring on "night terrors" when he signed up for the show.

Pantomime producer Lottie Bedlow did just that as the 31-year-old from West Sussex produced a showstopper in the shape of Louis Theroux's head.

The famed documentary maker may be flattered that he has been immortalised in this way but it was enough for viewers at home thinking they had tuned into a horror show.

There was praise for judge Prue though, who instantly recognised the cake to be Louis, but it wasn't enough for viewers to take to Twitter in their droves to share their thoughts on what they saw offered up.

Lottie claimed before the series that she is a “perpetually frustrated perfectionist” but for some watching the first episode, this may not have been reached with her Coconut and Lime flavoured cake.

When it was presented, one viewer asked on Twitter: "Louis Theroux or Carl Fredricksen?"

Another reacted, tweeting: "Yes it would resemble Louis if he was 80."

A third expressed their horror, sharing: "Lottie's Louis Theroux bust cake will most certainly haunt me until next week's episode."

A fourth summed up what many were thinking, tweeting: "That Louis Theroux cake is truly gonna give me night terrors."

The judges have their say

While there was praise for its likeness from Prue, Paul Hollywood was a little more scathing on the texture, telling the baking hopeful that it had been "over done" and the sponge was "too dry."

Fortunately for Lottie, she will get the chance to impress the judges again after she survived being cut from the show after week one.
