A heroic councillor has helped rescue an elderly woman who was trapped under a car.

North Ayrshire's Jim Montgomerie sprang into action after hearing the 81-year-old screaming from underneath the motor.

The Labour politician was driving near the Windy Ha pub in Saltcoats when he ran to the elderly woman's aid along with a number of concerned onlookers.

Councillor Montgomerie explained: "I saw a commotion at the side of the road.

"I've never heard screams like it, so I pulled over and when I got closer could see the lady was badly hurt and trapped under the car her husband was driving at the time.

"A woman was holding her head trying to comfort her while others tried to lift the car off of her.

"I tried to help lift the car which was getting us nowhere, then I thought to let the handbrake off and myself and another man pushed the car off of her and that's when I saw her badly injured leg.

The injured woman was described as lying face down and her leg was under the tyre. It is believed the woman stumbled off the kerb and her leg went under the moving car.

"I was just doing what anyone else would do," councillor Montgomerie added.

"I held the lady's hand and tried to keep talking to her to keep her distracted but it was clear she was traumatised. Her ankle was pointing in a completely different direction than how it should be; it was awful to see.

"I've since heard the lady has had an emergency operation and broke her leg in two places. I hope she recovers well and wish her all the best."
