Arsenal star Lucas Torreira in talks to join Atletico Madrid on loan transfer in huge Gunner boost to sign Thomas Partey

ATLETICO MADRID are reportedly in talks to sign Lucas Torreira from Arsenal - potentially clearing the way for Thomas Partey's arrival.

Mikel Arteta has not been a huge fan of the Uruguayan since arriving in North London, handing him only seven league starts in ten months.

And talks with Atletico Madrid have reportedly taken place over a potential loan deal, with a view to a permanent move.

That is according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and South America's Sebas Giovanelli, the latter believing a deal is close.

Torreira, 24, has also been discussing a £22million switch to Serie A side Torino.

Last month, the midfielder admitted his future may lie elsewhere, telling Sport 890: "I have a contract with the club and I have to respect it, obviously if I have to leave it will be for the best.

"We have to be calm and wait."

With the coronavirus pandemic hitting Atletico hard, it is thought they need to sell players before completing signings.

That could involve Partey, 27, who is a long-term targets of the Gunners'.

Atletico are demanding they pay his full £45m release clause although Arsenal may attempt to negotiate that down amid the Torreira talks.

A new contract offer for the Ghana midfielder, currently tied down to 2023, is said to have been rejected by the player.

Arteta is also tracking Houssem Aouar and it is claimed the club cannot afford both the Lyon star and Partey.

Rated at around £44m, Aouar has been described as the priority if Arsenal can only bring in one of the midfielders.

The Emirates Stadium outfit are under financial constraints themselves and are looking to shift a number of fringe players to continue Arteta's overhaul.

Emiliano Martinez has already left with Matteo Guendouzi, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Sead Kolasinac all said to be up for sale.

However, Arteta has decided against letting Rob Holding or Ainsley Maitland-Niles leave despite initially holding talks over exits to Newcastle and Wolves, respectively.
