There are just over five weeks until the January transfer window opens and speculation is already swirling as to who Mikel Arteta could add to his Arsenal squad.

The Gunners were active in the summer window, with Gabriel Magalhaes, Thomas Partey, and Willian all pitching up at the Emirates Stadium. Dani Ceballos also returned for a second season on loan from Real Madrid.

However, there are still a number of areas of Arteta’s squad that are in need of reinforcement. This has been made obvious by some of Arsenal’s recent performances, with Sunday’s goalless draw against Leeds United the latest uninspiring 90 minutes.

So here are the most noteworthy transfer stories concerning the Gunners ahead of the January transfer window.

Arsenal remain interested in Sheffield United midfielder

Sander Berge was a target for Arsenal before signing for Sheffield United in January, and the Gunners’ interest in the Norwegian midfielder has remained.

The 22-year-old has been a regular fixture in Chris Wilder’s side this season, impressing even as the Blades have struggled to find form, with the Bramall Lane outfit currently rooted to the foot of the Premier League table.

According to Norwegian outlet VG, Arsenal are still keen on signing Berge, with Arteta and the club’s recruitment staff impressed by what they have seen from the midfielder.

“I just have to say it: Sander has been unique. He is the one who has stood out for us. He is a complete midfielder. He can play as an 8 and as 6. He can play in different formations,” Wilder is quoted as saying about the player.

Balogun contract talks restarted

Arsenal have reopened contract talks with Folarin Balogun, whose current deal at the Emirates Stadium is set to expire at the end of the season.

Balogun has long been considered one of the Gunners’ brightest young talents, but looked set to depart after he rejected the offer of a new contract due to a lack of reassurances over playing time.

However, The Athletic reports Arsenal have restarted discussions with Balogun after the teenager was given an opportunity in the first team in the recent Europa League match against Dundalk.

The Gunners rejected a bid of around £5 million from Brentford for Balogun last January with Sheffield United also rebuffed in their efforts to sign the young forward in the summer.

Christian Eriksen has been an Inter Milan player for less than a year, but the Danish playmaker is expected to be on his way out of the Serie A club this January.

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta confirmed over the weekend Inter won’t try to keep a player who wants to leave, all but validating stories reporting Eriksen’s intention to force a January move.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Italian giants are now hopeful Arsenal will make an “attractive proposal” for the former Tottenham Hotspur man as Mikel Arteta searches for a midfield creator.

Granit Xhaka could be used in a swap deal for Eriksen, with Paris Saint-Germain also mentioned as potential suitors for the Danish international.
