Army officer in Household Cavalry fights for £700k payout after eye accident ended his career

AN Army officer in the Household Cavalry is fighting for a £700,000 payout after an eye accident ended his career.

Simon Harley, 36, was struck in the eye by a bungee cord as he put up a tent during training.

He was discharged from the elite corps after 15 years because he could no longer fire a gun, Central London county court heard.

Mr Harley, from Hampshire, is suing the Ministry of Defence over the long-term effects of his injuries, claiming the tent accident was caused by the negligence of his comrades or superiors.

The MoD denies liability for his accident, and alternatively suggests Mr Harley may himself have been at fault.

In court papers, Harley's lawyers claimed the blow caused immediate blood loss and he has since lost at least 75 percent vision in his right eye.

The injury also resulted in a broken nose and caused acute damage to his optic nerve his lawyers added.

The damage to his eye is also said to now put extra strain on his functioning left eye, causing headaches, fatigue and problems with long-distance driving.

The case will return to court for trial at a later date.
