A man has died after sustaining "critical injuries" following an assault near a train station in West Sussex.

Armed police responded to the scene of the incident in Three Bridges, Crawley, late on Tuesday night.

Forensic teams were seen scouring the area late last night with a large cordon in place around the crime scene.

Officers say they are searching for a suspect known to the victim but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Sussex Police said in a statement: "Sadly, a man has died after sustaining critical injuries in an assault in Russell Way, Crawley, on Tuesday evening.

"We are searching for a suspect known to the victim, but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Emergency services rushed to the scene near the Skyfall block of apartments near Three Bridges at 11pm last night.

Social media reports suggested that helicopters were circling overhead above Downland Drive and Brighton Road.
