Are Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew still married, when did they separate and why?

PRINCE Andrew is under scrutiny right now - but what does his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson say?

Here is everything we know about the pair's make up, break up and current relationship...

Are Sarah Ferguson & Prince Andrew still married?

No, the Prince and Fergie divorced in 1996.

They were introduced by Princess Diana and became engaged on Andrew's 26th birthday in 1986.

The pair had been friends as children but fell out of touch as they grew up.

Andrew and Sarah were married in Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986.

The Queen bestowed the titles Duke and Duchess of York on the young pair.

When did they separate?

By 1991, it is reported that the couple had drifted apart.

According to reports at the time, Andrew's naval duties meant he spent long periods of time away from the couple and it took its toll on their relationship.

Following their separation, Sarah would go on to claim: "I spent my entire first pregnancy alone," in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.

The couple announced their separation the following year, on March 19 with the pair officially divorcing in 1996.

When did they get married?

On March 19, 1986, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson announced their engagement.

The couple had known each other since childhood, meeting occasionally at polo matches, but met again at Royal Ascot in 1985.

Prince Andrew designed the engagement ring himself, consisting of ten diamonds surrounding a Burmese ruby, to complement Sarah's red hair.

After securing the Queen's permission, Andrew and Sarah were married in Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986.

The Queen bestowed the title Duke of York upon Prince Andrew and Sarahautomatically assumed her husband's royal and ducal status and became Her Royal Highness The Duchess of York.

As Duchess of York, Sarah joined her husband in carrying out royal engagements.

On August 8, 1988, their daughter Beatrice Elizabeth Mary was born and their second child Eugenie Victoria Helena was born on March 23, 1990.

The Duke and Duchess of York finally announced their separation on March 19, 1992, and announced their divorce in May 1996.

Although she retains the title of Duchess of York, should she marry again, Sarah would lose her title.

Following the split, Sarah became a writer, patron of a number of charities including Teenage Cancer Trust and Children in Crisis, as well as a television personality.

It has been reported that Sarah Ferguson was threatened with legal action by Jeffrey Epstein after she called him a paedo.

The Duchess of York spoke out against the disgraced financier in 2011 after it emerged she had accepted £15,000 from Epstein to pay her debts.

Do Andrew and Sarah have any children?

The pair have two daughters, Princess Eugenie and Beatrice.

Eugenie was born on March 23, 1990 and Beatrice was born on August 8, 1988.

Why is Prince Andrew in the press right now?

US court papers have alleged the Duke of York touched a woman while on his lap as she played with a Spitting Image puppet of him.

And almost 2,000 pages of a lawsuit were released in a defamation case involving Virginia Giuffre, who in 2015 claimed Prince Andrew slept with her three times, and Epstein’s ex-lover Ghislaine Maxwell.

He was accused of having a sexual encounter with her when she was 17 in London and New York and a year later at a party on Epstein’s private island in the Virgin Islands.

Another document describes an alleged sexual encounter between Ms Giuffre, now 35, and Andrew in a bathtub.

The Duke of York was pictured with his arm around the then 17-year-old's waist at the home of Maxwell in London in 2001 - but the Prince strongly denies the claims.

All the allegations about Prince Andrew were struck from the court record in 2015.

They were described by the judge as being "immaterial and impertinent".

What has Sarah Ferguson said about the allegations?

Fergie

has defended her "true gentleman" ex-husband Prince Andrew as he denies ever meeting Jeffrey Epstein's alleged sex slave.

The Duchess of York said on Instagram the prince was "giant of a principled man" ahead of his bombshell interview on BBC Newsnight.
