Applethwaite Green, Windermere opens up tuck shop for residents

STAFF members from a care home have set up a 'tuck shop' to support their residents to choose and purchase items.

Annaliza Razon and Agnes Kucharsksa who work at Applethwaite Green, Windremere used their own initiative to set up the tuck shop as not a lot of residents can go out to purchase goods at shop so they brought one inside.

Joanne McDermott, registered manager for Applethwaite Green said: “Residents suggested the idea for the tuck shop due to the ongoing COVID restrictions and concerns they had about visiting shops.

"The shop is run on a totally not-for-profit basis and staff members, Annaliza and Agnes, used their own time to organise and set it up.

Residents can purchase items such as stationary, toiletries, cards and much more daily.

Joanne said: "The shop helps to promote the social and emotional wellbeing of the residents and has increased inclusion, choice, and independence for some of our residents that would not normally choose to shop for themselves.

"It is available every day and the residents are continually giving us more ideas for additional products to be available.

"They really love having this resource available and we look forward to expanding our offering to them.”

Residents from the care home said they think it's a good idea and very hand

They said:“I think it is a very good idea. I suppose not a lot of us here can go out, so its like having a little shop inside the home”.

“It’s a good idea. Which lady doesn’t like shopping?”

“I can buy and send beautiful cards for my sister. It is very handy.

"It is nice to have little treats once in a while. I like the chocolate bars."
