Alex Jones breaks down in tears on The One Show as she sees her mum for first time in 5 months

ALEX Jones broke down in tears tonight as she hosted The One Show after seeing her mum on screen for the first time in five months.

The 43-year-old was taken aback when her mother’s face popped up live during the show and the BBC One presenter couldn’t contain her emotions.

Alex hasn’t seen her mum Mary since lockdown began more than 100 days ago.

During Friday’s show, hosted alongside Alex Scott, the pair were reading messages from viewers.

Alex began: “A message from Mary now who's from somewhere near Swansea who says she can't wait to see her daughter, who she says she hasn't seen in 16 weeks.”

The penny dropped for the Welsh lovely as she put her hand to her chest and got visibly emotional.

Alex Scott went on: “In fact, she can't wait any longer and here she is, actually.”

The mum-of-one then gasped “oh no!” as her mum Mary’s face appeared on the screen in the studio.

Fighting back tears, the TV presenter covered her face with her hands and choked out: “Hiya mum! It's only going to be – how many days now? Five?”

There wasn’t a dry eye in the studio as Alex’s mum, who was in a similarly emotional state, told the audience it had been “five very long months” since she had seen her daughter.

Wiping away tears, Alex said: “This is the first time I've seen her get quite emotional.”

The One Show has been broadcasting during lockdown meaning Alex hasn’t taken a day off to see her family, however now measures are easing it’s the perfect time to take a break.

The star is going away for two weeks to see her family for the first time in months.

She said to Alex and the crew on the BBC One show: “It's been a real privilege to come to work every day with you lot.

“And thanks, as well as my family, for getting me through this really weird time.

“It's been a real honour to do this job.”
