Ilkay Gundogan has quietly been one of Manchester City's best players over the last few years, as Alan Shearer has heaped praise on the central midfielder.

City's vice-captain was certainly missed while being injured earlier this season, but has since slotted straight back into his place in the team.

The German star has managed the links between defence and midfield excellently since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

Playing for both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, the 31-year-old has picked up some tendencies which have translated into excellent performances in recent months.

Gundogan has been one of City's better performers in recent years, and has been recognised by being made vice-captain of the club.

On Match of the Day 2, Premier League legend Alan Shearer praised his performance against Burnley and spoke about why he's the perfect player for City.

Shearer said: "He offers himself up at every opportunity and is so comfortable on the ball.

"When teams are trying to frustrate Manchester City and put men behind the ball, what you want is someone to move the ball quickly and to be available at all times - he's exactly what they need.

Ilkay Gundogan got back to scoring ways for Man City against West Ham on Sunday

"Ilkay Gundogan was the stand out (against Burnley), he's always offering himself up to get the ball and move it on quickly.

"Don't be surprised if he continues to pop up with goals too, he's always available to get forward and make those runs into the box."

It's fair to say that Gundogan has picked up some of the offensive productivity usually supplied by Kevin de Bruyne.

The Belgium international has had a slow start to the season by his standards. But with plenty of time for him to pick up the slack, alongside the likes of Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Fernandinho - City are looking like they're ready to maintain another title challenge as they prepare for the hectic winter schedule.
