Amongst a population of 65m, one in eight Brits do not have enough to eat.

People living in food poverty are forced to compromise on the variety and quality of food, reduce quantities, and experience hunger.

But it’s not just adults who are affected. One in five children grow up in a household where food is scarce and, further to this, one in four will grow up in poverty – which has a direct effect on parents, who regularly skip meals due to a lack of money.

Despite this, an incredible amount of food waste is produced each year. A quarter of the food currently lost would feed 870m hungry people around the world – in Europe alone, binned food could feed 200m people.

In the UK, 1.3b tonnes of food is thrown away each year before it even gets to homes or schools – which costs approximately £522b. This amount would provide the equivalent of 162 meals per year to the 8.4m people suffering from food poverty in the UK.

8.4m people in the UK are struggling to afford to eat. That’s why, for every £1 you give to FareShare this winter through Barclays, Barclays will donate £2 up to to £1m.

To help feed someone this Winter, go to fareshare.org.uk/Barclays or text GIVE 5, GIVE 10 or GIVE 20 to 70630. T&Cs apply.

At the forefront of addressing this issue is FareShare, the UK’s largest food redistribution charity. With more than 30 warehouses right across the UK, FareShare takes food that can’t be sold in shops, either because of packaging errors, short shelf life or over production, and redistributes it through a network of 11,000 frontline organisations.

The food FareShare redistributes is nourishing and fresh – the same as the food you’d eat at home. Homeless hostels, school breakfast clubs, domestic violence refuges, older people’s lunch clubs, food banks and hospices all depend on FareShare’s help.

Ninety per cent of these charities have seen demand reach crisis levels since the pandemic started, and they’re preparing for even more people to find themselves in need this winter. Over the coming months, FareShare will also be delivering food to night shelters and school holiday projects to reach even more people who are struggling.

You can play a part in tackling this issue – by helping to feed someone this winter – through a new initiative.

Barclays is supporting charities as they carry out vital work with its £100m COVID-19 Community Aid package, and is helping to tackle food poverty with its support for FareShare. For every £1 donated, Barclays will donate £2, up to a total of £1m, until February 28.

FareShare is able to provide up to four meals with every £1 donated – through Barclays your £1 means up to 12 meals for those in need.
