Team Drainage UK recently celebrated its first birthday and its own independence day anniversary from a group of businesses, on July 3.

Steve Scholes, owner and managing director, said: “It’s been a very difficult year since the buyout from a group. A business I thought I knew the true value of, quickly turned into a nightmare."

However, Steve knew no matter the state, he had to fully commit himself to the project, not just for himself but his employees and family.

Twelve months on, Team Drainage UK is now in a position to accelerate growth and investment. This has been achieved with the help of a new business partner and finance director, Mick Seddon.

Steve said: “Without Mick, Team Drainage would probably have fallen into administration. It was actually Mick's idea to call the business Team Drainage UK as he identified that we wouldn’t be here today without having a dedicated team behind us."

With the whole team on board, Team Drainage aims to offer an honest, reliable and affordable service to all sectors.

Exciting opportunities for the local community

Team Drainage UK is always looking for new opportunities but some just seem to come knocking on the door.

This was the case with the introduction of local domestic septic tank emptying. The business quickly realised that the local community was being charged an extortionate amount for such a service and so decided to use its own method and show the local community what it could do. Team Drainage found a way that it could carry out the emptying of any size tank for at least 25 per cent less than what people were paying.

Since the pandemic, the business has noticed a huge demand for this service, due to people working from home or on furlough. It now has a dedicated team carrying out this exercise 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

New business opportunities post Covid-19

Team Drainage has introduced a method to help developers comply with the strict pandemic and environmental regulations post Covid-19, utilising its multi-skilled workforce.

Steve explained: “We decided to train all of our drainage engineers in geo-positioning and topographical survey methods, meaning we can carry out various works on site without introducing more personnel. This, we believe, is a UK first. However, we have gone one step further; we are now training all of our jetting and vacuum engineers to carry out drainage camera surveys whilst cleansing your drainage assets.

"By multi-skilling the workforce, we are able to reduce our costs, speed up delivery, comply with Covid-19 regulations, plus adhere to our carbon footprint.

"I’m really excited about showcasing our services locally and nationally over the coming months and years, as I believe we have unique selling points to help local authorities save money, which can then be put towards other important matters."

With the recent success of nationwide tenders, Team Drainage UK is again offering full time opportunities to the local community. Having been raised in Skelmersdale, Steve is looking forward to offering employment to the local people and in turn helping the local economy get back on its feet.

Recently, Team Drainage was invited to be the main shirt sponsor of Skelmersdale United FC. The relationship between both parties has since gone from strength to strength and with that, the business hopes to increase its involvement with the club in the coming years.

Following their first birthday, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has welcomed Team Drainage UK’s continued success as they look to recruit 12 new staff in the coming weeks.

Rosie Cooper MP commented: “Congratulations to Team Drainage UK on their first birthday and their continued business growth which provides jobs in Skelmersdale and West Lancashire.

“Steve and the team have worked hard to build up their business while continuing to offer training and employment opportunities to local residents. Especially welcome is the news of 12 new jobs at what is a difficult economic time.

"I wish them all the success as they continue to grow and deliver drainage solutions to residents and businesses across West Lancashire and beyond.”
