Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s performance during Manchester United’s defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday has been slammed.
United suffered their first loss of the Premier League season after Kortney Hause headed home in the 88th minute for Dean Smith’s side.
Bruno Fernandes was gifted an opportunity to rescue a point from the penalty spot in injury time, but blazed his spot kick over the bar to hand Villa their first win at Old Trafford since 2009.
Gray, who won three England caps during his playing career, hit out at Wan-Bissaka, claiming that without his defensive abilities he would struggle to get a game lower down the football pyramid.
"This squad, when it’s depleted, still isn’t up there with the best in the Premier League," he told talkSPORT.
“Wan-Bissaka, he’s the best defender in the Premier League in a one vs one situation, but his distribution with the ball, with the ball at his feet he wouldn’t get a game in League Two.
“When I watch him play, he never looks comfortable with the ball at his feet.
“I don’t feel confident at all, I don’t think he does either. Defensively he’s absolutely outstanding.
“They’ve got big problems at Manchester United, I know they’ve started the season well but I think yesterday the cracks started to appear.”
Earlier this season QPR striker Charlie Austin also questioned whether Wan-Bissaka was good enough to be starting for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.
"Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not up to the [required] quality. We played them the other day, and I know it was only a pre-season, but they need to go all out for Kieran Trippier." He told talkSPORT.
"That’s who they’re crying out for. Aaron Wan-Bissaka can’t defend!
"And his final ball is not what a centre-forward wants, it’s not what [Edinson] Cavani wants, it’s not what [Marcus] Rashford wants."
