Stockport's Old Town will welcome another new bar next week with the opening of The Good Rebel.

Situated on Mealhouse Brow, just off the Market Place, the venue is being launched by Martin Healy, who brings with him 10 years of bar management experience at chains including Turtle Bay and The Slug & Lettuce.

"I'd been a general manager for 10 years for two big companies and I decided I'd amassed enough knowledge and experience that I'm going to have a pop at it myself," the 34-year-old, from Burnage, told the M.E.N.

The bar will have space for around 80 people inside, with a 'cinematic' look decorated in yellow and white with accents of red.

"It's going to be a really laid back bar with good beer and great cocktails," said Martin.

"I thought it was a bit pubby in Stockport so I saw there was a space in the market.

"It'll be welcoming, there's no nonsense - just a good bar with good music. I want to get people dancing."

The bar will join Stockport Old Town's developing nightlife

The cocktail list is still being finalised, but will feature a chocolate espresso martini made with Belgian creme de cacao. The bar will also serve a range of European lagers and beers, and a selection of wines.

Martin said he had been drawn to Stockport because of its developing nightlife and the regeneration work going on in the town.

"I decided I wanted to do this about two and a half years ago and I looked around, firstly at Chorlton and Didsbury, but I wanted to be part of something at the beginning," he said.

"I did my research and Stockport popped up. I put some feelers out and met with the council in December 2017. Back then there wasn't much there but they took me through all the plans for redevelopment and it's great to see it coming to fruition now.

"They've provided me with support all the way, they have been brilliant."

Martin is now putting the finishing touches on the bar ready for it to open on Thursday January 30.

"It's really satisfying," he said.

"It's been a slog. The last two weeks I've been here from 9am to 11pm, but it doesn't feel like work. It's such a buzz .

"It's something I've been striving for and it's really fulfilling. It's always been my dream."
