    CAPTAIN HOOKED

Granit Xhaka has admitted he would be reluctant to take back the Arsenal captaincy on a permanent basis if he was offered it.

He said: “Of course, I don’t lie. There was a moment, because it was not easy for me and my family. I hope people understand this.

“But I think I showed my character. I am not a guy who runs away. I always say to the club, ‘When I [am] here, I am ready to give everything’. It was like this always.

“I train very hard and that things turned around is the key.

“This [has given me] the most happiness.”

    MORNING GUNNERS FANS

Mikel Arteta masterminded a thrilling 3-2 win over Everton on Sunday.

But his thoughts will now be on Thursday’s Europa League tie against Greek giants Olympiacos.

Arsenal won the first leg 1-0 and fans will be looking to the likes of Granit Xhaka to secure progress to the next round.

The midfielder has become a mainstay in Arteta’s XI after looking set to leave in January.

He infamously told fans to “f*** off” while being subbed and was consequently stripped of the captaincy.

But Xhaka is confident he can rebuild his relationship with supporters, explaining: “I think everyone knows that ten weeks ago I was not enjoying my football.

“It was not a good time for me and my family and there were moments when I thought I would never play for this club again.

“I realise the fans want the players to perform in every game but they also need to understand that it is not always so easy.”

Xhaka’s resurgence has come at the expense of Matteo Guendouzi, who was axed by Arteta after not pulling his weight during the recent training camp in Dubai.

It has now emerged he received a telling off from Arsenal chief Edu after a second incident where he got topless during a team outing in the Arab nation.

Meanwhile, contract talks with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are said to have stalled.

The striker has less than 18 months to run on his current deal.

And it’s reckoned Inter Milan are preparing to make an audacious bid should Lautaro Martinez join Barcelona this summer.

    SUPPORT TEAM

Granit Xhaka wants a more open relationship with the Arsenal fans who tried to hound him out of the club.

The Swiss international was ready to quit the Emirates last month and pushed the Gunners to accept a £26million bid from Hertha Berlin.

But now he has had a change of heart after emerging as one of the most important players in the Mikel Arteta revolution.

Xhaka said: “I think everyone knows that ten weeks ago I was not enjoying my football.

“It was not a good time for me and my family and there were moments when I thought I would never play for this club again.

“I had a tough time during my first six months at Borussia Moenchengladbach because I wasn’t in the team, but this was something else completely.

“This was not about me as a player, this was about the human.

“But now I hope that people can understand the situation and how I was feeling inside.

“I realise the fans want the players to perform in every game but they also need to understand that it is not always so easy.

“This is the biggest difference between Germany and England, because here we don’t have the connection with the fans.

“In Germany, we have many open training sessions when the fans can come and talk to you.

“Here, everything is closed and it would be good to be able to explain to people why something is going well or not so well.”

    GETTING SHIRTY

Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi was told off by Edu in a SECOND bust-up with club bosses after getting topless on a team outing in Dubai.

The French youngster, 20, was dropped for the win over Newcastle after a training ground row with an unnamed team-mate.

Boss Mikel Arteta stepped in to break up the impending scrap, but it was Guendouzi who was deemed most guilty of the pair.

The Frenchman was given a verbal dressing down and dropped for the 4-0 win over Newcastle last Sunday.

But it has now been revealed Guendouzi was disciplined for a second, separate incident during the five-day trip to Dubai.

This time it was up to technical director Edu, not Arteta, to have a stern word with the former Lorient star.

The Gunners' Invincibles hero gave Guendouzi a dressing down after he partied with his shirt off while enjoying some local music during the winter break in Dubai.

    BETTER THAN YOUR AVERAGE

Arsenal's average positions from yesterday make for interesting viewing.

Look how high up the pitch Saed Kolasinac (31) is, he's right next to Aubameyang (14).
