Britons hoping for a summer holiday abroad have been consistently warned they could face disappointment because of coronavirus restrictions.

The UK Foreign Office is still advising against all-but-essential travel - despite many countries easing their lockdown measures.

But there is now a glimmer of hope for would-be holidaymakers wanting to jet off this summer.

Ministers have been provided with a list of 45 countries that should be prioritised for quarantine-free links with the UK, KentLive reports.

Plans to introduce a 14-day quarantine period for anyone arriving in the UK prompted airlines to draw up a list of nations that could establish air corridors with Britain.

Some of then UK's best-loved holiday destinations, including Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Portugal were among European countries included.

Places further afield in the Caribbean, Canada and the United States were also on the list.

A Whitehall source told a national newspaper: "A lot of [the list] is focused on short-haul leisure – popular holiday locations and places where people might fly to see friends and family. We’d want to see as many as possible set up by the end of the month.

"The Government requested the airlines send it in, so they could have a sense of where the volume and demand would be. It’s quite a contrast to a week and a half ago, when Downing Street played down the idea of air bridges."

Holidaymakers are still hoping to enjoy a summer break this year

Airlines involved in creating the index want the first air bridges to be set up by the end of June. many carriers are planning to resume flights to these destinations during the early part of July.

Tory MPs have criticised the blanket quarantine plan coming into force in a weeks' time. They said it will further damage the travel industry, and makes no sense for passengers coming from countries with very low rates of infection.

Meanwhile, the UK suffers the second-highest death rate as a result of coronavirus, and fears of a second wave grow as lockdown restrictions are eased, but people continue not to social distance.
