Ipswich, Mendip and Great Yarmouth have the lowest rates of coronavirus in England as the Delta variant spreads rapidly in other parts of the country.

Blackburn with Darwen's rate of 549.8 cases per 100,000 people - the highest in England - is 83 times the rate in Ipswich - 6.6 - the country's lowest.

Mendip in Somerset had the second lowest rate (8.7) in the seven days to June 13, while Great Yarmouth had a rate of 9.1.

It comes as rates have doubled in some places in a week and a separate study found that cases were "rising exponentially" across England.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (June 14-17) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Meanwhile, surge testing is being rolled out in parts of Surrey amid a rise in cases of the more transmissible Delta variant, first identified in India.

People living or working in specific parts of the county are being strongly encouraged to get a PCR test, whether or not they have symptoms.

The enhanced testing will begin on Friday and run until Sunday June 27 for the areas of Banstead, Walton-on-the-Hill, Tattenham Corner and Tadworth, as well as Reigate town centre and some surrounding areas including Meadvale.
