Former UP member dies as boat capsizes near St Martin's Island

A woman died after a speed boat capsized due to gusty wind and strong surge in the Bay of Bengal near St Martin Island in Cox's Bazar this afternoon.

The deceased, Firoza Begum, 55, was a former member of St Martin's Union Parishad, said Khorshed Alam, a member of St Martin union parishad.

Meanwhile, the coastguard team rescued 23 passengers, including 17 tourists, from the bay after the capsize, said Khorshed, also president of Speedboat Owners' Association.

Khorshed said the speedboat carrying 17 tourists, five locals, and two boatmen left the Kayukkhali ghat at Teknaf around this noon.

When the boat reached Tumarmath on Teknaf St Martin naval route, it sank due to the strong surge caused by gusty wind, he added.

The base of the speed boat was damaged due to strong currents, said the UP member.

A coastguard team and locals from some other speed boats rescued the victims, he said.

Three injured including Feroza were taken to 20-Bed hospital in St Martin where she died, said Naimur Rahman, a doctor of the hospital.

The fatal incident had been averted due to the quick response of the coastguard, said Mujibor Rahman, chairman of St Martin Union Parishad.

Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury, UNO of Teknaf said necessary steps are being taken in this regard.
