FANS around the world are desperately wanting to know who will become the next Time Lord after Jodie Whittaker quit.
The first-ever female Time Lord, Jodie will be leaving the show at the end of 2022.
Who will be the new Doctor?
Jodie Whittaker has been playing the Doctor since 2017, taking over from legendary Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, who starred in the final three series written and overseen by Steven Moffat.
Now, all bets are on for which actress or actor will next take up the mantle to play one of British television's most iconic characters.
David Tennant and Lydia West are currently the bookies favourites to take on the plum role.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Lydia West is a firm frontrunner in the race to replace Jodie Whittaker, and the odds suggest it'll most likely be her".
What are the odds on the new Doctor?
David Tennant - 6/5
David Tennant, who played the Doctor between 2005 and 2010, is rumoured to be returning to the role.
The 51-year-old Scotsman is now just 6/5 in the latest odds on the next Dr Who.
According to the Daily Record, the actor is already set to return to the show for a handful of episodes to celebrate the series' 60th-anniversary.
Omari Douglas - 5/1
Omari Douglas made his TV debut in Channel 4 drama It’s a Sin earlier this year — created by returning Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies.
Roscoe Babatunde was his first TV role, but Douglas impressed both Davies and viewers with his performance and was previously reported by The Sun to be the new showrunner’s top pick to take over as The Doctor.
Writer Russell was previously in charge of the BBC One sci-fi show from 2005 to 2010.
He cast Christopher Eccleston then David Tennant in the title role having worked with them on earlier projects.
A TV insider said: “Omari is the perfect candidate on so many levels, including the fact that the BBC said they’d prefer the Doctor to be played by a non-white actor."
Olly Alexander - 6/1
As mentioned, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander is a favourite to replace Jodie as the new Doctor thanks to his breakout role in Russell T. Davies' It's A Sin, which won him a lot of praise from critics and viewers alike.
Russell, who was the show-runner to first successfully revive Doctor Who in 2005 after a 16-year series hiatus (not including the 1996 film), admitted Olly would be a perfect fit for the role.
Given Olly's very busy musical career, it seems unlikely that he would have time for the role.
He told the Press Association, "I'm definitely not going to be the Doctor but it's going to be so amazing, Russell's Doctor. I mean, it was before, and it will be again, and it has been great. So I'm excited to watch the show because I'm a fan."
Lydia West - 4/1
Lydia West has seen her fame soar thanks to her role on the series, It's A Sin.
The actress also starred in the highly praised BBC One series Years and Years.
Lydia originally trained in ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary dance as a teenager, but quit after a foot injury.
After graduating from university with a degree in business, she worked as a personal assistant and trained part-time at Identity School of Acting.
Michael Sheen - 6/1
Celebrated actor Michael Sheen is known for his chameleonic ability to transform into completely different characters.
In 2020, viewers saw him morph into Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’s Chris Tarrant on Quiz, and before that we saw him as ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair in The Queen and football manager Brian Clough in The Damned United.
Fans have also noticed that Michael has a lot of chemistry with former 10th Doctor David Tennant, who he starred alongside in Amazon Prime's Good Omens and BBC One's Staged.
Michaela Coel - 10/1
After winning two Baftas for limited series I May Destroy You, which she created and starred in herself, Michaela Cole is another favourite to step into the Doctor's shoes.
The Chewing Gum star is no stranger to sci-fi, previously acting in shows like Black Mirror and Aliens, and would undoubtedly bring a fresh, exciting new take on the character.
However, many have speculated that while Michaela is at such an incredible point in her career, it seems unlikely she would want to give up her creative freedom to enter into a long contract performing someone else's script.
T'Nia Miller - 12/1
T'Nia is known for playing Hannah Grose, the housekeeper in The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Before that she was known for playing Maxine in Sex Education.
T'Nia also played Charlie Morris in the Amazon series The Feed.
You may also recognise her from Channel 4's 2015 series Banana.
