Dwight Yorke has vowed to break the stranglehold of Celtic and Rangers at the top of Scottish football if he is given the chance to manage Aberdeen.
The Dons are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Jim Goodwin at the end of last month following a number of poor results which included being knocked out the Scottish Cup by junior side Darvel. A number of names have been linked with the job including, former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder and ex-Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert.
Record Sport reported last month that former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke had contacted Aberdeen about the managerial position at Pittodrie after his stint at Australian A League outfit Macarthur FC ended two weeks ago.
Yorke revealed it is a privilege to be linked with the vacancy and said he could break the dominance the Glasgow teams have at the top of the game in Scotland. Aberdeen were the last team other than Celtic or Rangers to lift the league title in Scotland when Alex Ferguson led the Dons to glory in the 1984/85 season.
Last week Yorke's former teammate Mark Bosnich told the Record the ex-striker could win Aberdeen the Europa Conference League and use his Alex Ferguson links to improve the situation at Pittodrie.
Yorke told OLBG: "I could break Celtic and Rangers’ hold on the SPFL if given the Aberdeen job. Mark Bosnich is a good friend, I promise I haven't paid him to say I can win the Europa Conference League with Aberdeen! We know that Celtic and Rangers have had a stranglehold over the league for years and no one has been able to break that hold.
"There is a good opportunity for me to break that hold in the right setting with the right backing. I can understand the high expectation because that is how I am as an individual, things aren't impossible. Before anything happens, I have to get the job first, this is just based on what Mark Bosnich has said.
"It’s a privilege to be linked with the Aberdeen job. As a manager, you can't disregard any kind of job. Aberdeen are obviously a big club with a great history, they had arguably the greatest manager in English history, Sir Alex Ferguson. It's a privilege to be linked to such a club like Aberdeen, whether anything will materialise then that's a different story."
