Sweden Temporarily Moves Iraq Embassy Staff For Security Reasons

The Swedish Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that the seconded staff and activities of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad had been temporarily evacuated to Stockholm for security reasons after protestors seized it.

As a result a planned Koran burning in Stockholm sparked hundreds of protesters to attack and vandalize the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, expelled the Swedish ambassador on Thursday.

The employees and activities will temporarily relocate to Stockholm for security reasons, a representative for the Swedish foreign ministry said on Friday, declining to add more information, Reuters reported.

“What has happened is completely unacceptable, and the government strongly condemns these attacks,” Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said in a statement on Thursday.

This came after a day that hundreds of protestors stormed the Swedish Embassy in the capital city of Baghdad, climbed its walls and set it ablaze in response to the expected Quran burning in Sweden.

A Quran copy was burned in the heart of Stockholm on June 28 as part of a demonstration that the police had permitted.

Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old immigrant from Iraq, tore pages off the Quran and set it ablaze. Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al-Adha on that day, one of Islam’s most significant religious occasions.
