Afghan Refugees Among Victims Of Greek Boat Disaster

Afghan Embassy in Italy confirms that Afghan refugees were among the victims when the Greek refugee boat capsized.

According to the embassy, at least 78 people from Afghanistan and Pakistan died in the recent disaster off the coast of Greece.

The embassy said that hundreds more are believed to be missing based on estimates that 400 to 750 people were on board.

On Wednesday, the boat capsized off the coast of Greece, around 80 kilometres from the town of Pylos in the south.

According to Greek authorities, 104 survivors and 78 bodies were brought ashore shortly after the tragedy.

Afghans in Rome were urged not to take unnecessary risks by embarking on “unsafe water, insecure, and overcrowded ships.”

The embassy has urged international organizations to set up safe passageways for Afghan refugees travelling to Europe in search of safety and asylum. Additionally, it asked the international community and the Afghan government to deal with the underlying causes of forced migration and displacement in Afghanistan.
